When you will study in the Netherlands, we advise you to take out a Tasman Insurance. The following cover is included: coverage for family circumstances, Luggage, Medical costs all in, Accidents and Liability.
With this cover you insure yourself against all kind of extra costs due to emergency situations. Like when you have to go home suddenly because a family member got seriously ill. Also the necessary communication costs are insured. If you need help or advise, you can always contact the Tasman Emergency line. This professional international assistance network is on hand twenty-four hours a day and they will make every effort to solve your problem as quickly as possible.
Imagine this: your luggage doesn't arrive or arrives much too late at your destination. It's certainly very frustrating. However, knowing that you are insured for the necessary purchase of toiletries and clothing can at least help you get by. This way, you won't suffer financially. There are numerous other situations where something could go wrong with your personal belongings, whether they are valuable or not. With the baggage coverage in your Tasman package, you have extensive coverage, which is quite reassuring.
When you are a student and you don't have any official income of some kind in the Netherlands, it is not mandotory for you to take out a so called "Basisverzekering" (Basic compulsary insurance). Otherwise you would apply for such an insurance at a regular health insurance company and it would cost you about € 100,- or more per month (with an excess of € 385 per calendar year in 2024).
In your Tasman Insurance package your necessary medical costs like for doctors or specialists, prescripted medication, fysiotherapy or hospitalization are all insured. Also necessary dental costs are covered up to € 350. The other medical costs are insured up to cost-price and there is no excess for medical expenses made outside your home country. When you do pay a visit to your home country, you are insured for medical costs up to cost-price during a maximum of 31 days.
Your glass of red wine accidentally spills over your friend's white blouse? Or that expensive vase you accidentally knock over at your host family's home while cleaning up? Accidents happen, and if you are liable, the costs can quickly add up, especially if there is any injury involved. A good liability insurance policy is essential in such cases.
Please note that many regular liability insurance policies exclude coverage for damage caused during work. However, with Tasman Insurance, there is coverage under the Liability section for incidents that occur during your exchange.
An accident that results in permanent disability or death brings a lot of grieff and in most cases, requires a lot of complex arrangements to take care of. Unfortunately, that is something that you cannot insure yourself for. But an accidents-insurance does provide you with a financial compensation. In the case of death an amount of max. € 6.000 is insured and in case of total permanent disability an amount of max. € 30.000 is insured.

Calculate your premium
Fill out the date that you are travelling to the Netherlands and the day that you will (probably) return to your home country.
When you have gone through all the steps you will receive a confirmation by email. Then your insurance certificate and the General Conditions will be sent to you by email within a few working days.

The costs per insurance certificate are € 7,50.
Rent a car
When you are going to rent a car the insurance will be part of the rental contract. Keep an eye on (high) excesses for damage that you cause to third parties or to the rental car. Maybe you can have the excess reduced or maybe you can buy it off completely.
Driving someone else's car
When you cause damage to or with a car that you loaned from someone, it's is the problem of the person that gave you permission to drive the car. You cannot insure yourself against damage that you cause while driving someone else's car. So when you do, always make good arrangements up front.
